What is woodworking?

The word “woodworking” means many things, but here’s the fairly boring definition I came up with, which is probably well-accepted by most hobbyists.

Making beautiful and/or useful things with wood requires cutting, forming, and joining this material.

Unlike other types of construction, woodworking does not require physical effort on the part of the builder. Simple concepts make this a hobby you can learn easily, yet it never gets old. As your skills advance, it will always be challenging. Woodworking is a great way to solve problems. Every project I build represents a new challenge for me, having been doing it for more than 40 years. Processes like this are inevitable. Also, you can take your hands and your mind and make really cool things for your home. It is generally a very solitary experience: if you are introverted and enjoy working your way through a task from start to finish, then woodworking is for you.

Traditionally, woodworkers were classified as either male or female. Taking a boring class with kids who didn’t want to be in it, or throwing away a lot of time building the occasional birdhouse in the garage with a cranky shop teacher.

There is no longer truth to those stereotypes. The number of woodworking communities online and the affordability of materials and tools have facilitated diversity in the industry.

Table Saw:

As a whole, the concept of a “table saw” can appear to be a little confusing at first, especially if you are familiar with saws like a band saw. These saws use a kind of tapered surface to cut materials.

Most table saws use a table-like arrangement, which is why they are called table saws – or at least that is how I would describe them.

Miter Saw:

Miter saws are devices with multiple cutting points that allow you to make cuts at one time. Using a swing arm, the saw can create calculated cuts using an edge mounted on the edge. There are a variety of uses for a miter saw, including crown shaping, picture placement, entryway outlines, and window housings.

The top bit of a powered miter saw also cuts angles into a work piece by adjusting the slant of the blade while it is level. A solitary compound miter saw is one for which the pivot can be moved only in one direction. Two-way compound miter saws are known as such if the hubs can be shifted both left and right. When laid flat on the table of a table saw with the fence in place, some models offer a sliding rail framework or a turn arm for cutting more extensive work pieces. Miter saws with sliding compounds are called sliding compound miter saws.
